Before You Apply: Run the 8-Point Fake-Job Check
Verify the employer, recruiter, job duties, interview process, payment requests, checks, sensitive-data requests, and pressure tactics. Legitimate employers do not make you pay to get hired.
1–2: Verify the Employer and Recruiter
Find the role on the company’s official careers page. Type the website yourself. Check that the recruiter uses the company’s real email domain—not Gmail, Yahoo, WhatsApp, Telegram, or text only. Search the company and recruiter name with “scam” or “complaint.”
3–4: Look for a Real Job and Real Interview
The posting should explain duties, schedule, pay structure, location limits, and supervisor. Expect a normal interview and time to ask job-related questions. Vague duties or an instant offer are warning signs.
5–6: Never Pay or Process a Check
Do not pay for equipment, training, software, certification, or a background check to get hired. Never deposit a check and send money onward, buy gift cards, or purchase equipment for the “employer.”
7–8: Protect Your Information and Time
Do not share your SSN, driver’s license, or bank details before a verified offer and legitimate onboarding. Stop if they promise unusually high pay for little work, demand immediate action, or avoid identifying the employer.
